Back by popular demand, business consultant Katrina Sawa joined us Live On_Line and we had so many participants on the chat.
One viewer wanted to know if starting her own gift basket company is a good idea. Another wants to start her own clothing line, and someone else wants to open a restaurant.
Sawa offered these 8 things you need to know to start your own business in any economy.
1. Brainstorm the idea - something you're passionate about but will also make money
2. Develop the business model. There are on-line, off-line, traditional and non-traditional models. Which one is right for you? Sawa said don't skip this step or the first one because you will jump in without a plan and it probably won't work.
3. Products and services. What will you sell? Something tangible or yourself?
4. Logistics. Business licenses, business basics (cards, website, other)
5. Setting up systems. The not so sexy stuff that doesn't pay you, but in the long run you'll be glad you have.
6. Hit the ground running. Where to start and what to do to start making money.
7. Ongoing marketing. Mail, in-person networking, speaking, on-line networking, referrals.
8. What's next. You always want to be thinking ahead and thinking bigger for your next step or evolution of your business in order to keep up with the times, technology, competition and your own ideas.
