Be FIERCE at Work!

Be FIERCE at Work!

There are those of us who have exercised patience to the point of exhaustion. You’ve played the political games at work hoping for your time to shine. You have spent quarter after quarter training those less qualified for your dream post while you’ve sit by steaming over coffee. The certificates you hold for exhibiting the best team behaviors are collecting dust while you yearn to get your turn in the driver’s seat. Nice girls finish last!

Leave the diplomacy strategy to the UN. The business world has no room for you to stand in the corner and wait with your hand in the air. Movers and shakers are moving and shaking so you have to get in the game! The passive approach is ineffective and the longer you wait to take your rightful place, the less time you have to make your mark and leave your legacy.

ASSESS YOURSELF. Begin your campaign to move up the career ladder with an honest evaluation of your skills, your strengths and your network. You must know your value because it is the platform upon which you will build. Discover how your attributes improve your work environment, your company or your department, whichever is appropriate. What do you bring to the table? Understand where you fit into the picture. If you determine that you’re not on the right career track, make changes. We should all work where we can perform the best based on our talents and gifts. Don’t waste precious time trying to become something you’re not.

SHOW YOUR WORTH. If you are aware of someone, some process, something or some idea that will strengthen your organization, be diligent in communicating it. Be strategic. You may have to deliberately align yourself with partners to create a base of support. Find like-minded individuals who are also committed to the work. Get them to spread your ideas. The task is to create a following, a network. Ultimately, it will benefit the entire group and establish your credibility.

MAKE THINGS HAPPEN. Once you’ve gained the support and the resources you need, move forward. You have to be the front-runner in seeing your idea to completion. It may require longer hours and more sacrifice. The company will undoubtedly benefit from your efforts. Remember though, that the end goal is not organizational success but personal achievement.
