Security In Cyberspace
Recently I received an email from a close friend who was concerned about her personal information being seen on different locations through the internet. I checked out the web site and low and behold – it is true. Here is my reply to my friend and to you.
Hey _________________,
Sorry that this alarmed you, but do you remember when your husband showed us an overview of your and our home when we lived in Calamazoo? It’s common knowledge or should I say – modern technology; and it’s not just Myspace or Facebook. I think the name for it is “Social Networking” (I may be wrong on the terminology).
Let me help you a bit. If you type my name in “Google” as Victoria Thomas Poller and do a ‘web search’ – see what you come up with. All your business is out there in the Cyber Streets. That’s why they are warning our young people not to pose in questionable pictures and then advertising those pictures (you can’t even keep them is a shoebox – nothing safe). They never know when they would have a chance to be the next President, Miss America or land a great job that would run across one of these shots later in life.
About ten years ago a Pastor and his wife, whom my family knew in Germany, wanted to formulate a reunion cruise of those who had served with us overseas. All we had were names and maybe the last place where those persons were located here in the states. Since I was more knowledgeable about looking up information on the computer, I went to work. I chose a site that did not charge anything for a little information about a person and that was “Whitepages.com”. The reward for my work included the person’s name, addresses (yes, more locations than where they live presently), phone numbers and information on their children if they were living away from home.
Can you call it a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ thing to have so much information at your fingertips? Can a criminal use the information? – Sure they can. So what should you do? Instead of passing on a cyber link to check out the fact that “big brother is watching” or calling a phone number to take your name off the record, which I do believe may ‘sell’ your phone number to other agencies just like your email address (my junk mail is loaded with a ‘blocked list’), then I would, and do, continue to pray and be cautious of what I post in print. Job 19: 22-23 states: 23”Oh that my words were now written! oh that they were printed in a book! 24That they were graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock for ever!” Remember, once it’s out there – it’s out there. Watch & pray, be wise yet harmless.
