Tuesday, July 28, 2009 Cari Tatian RN, MSN, OCN
From a very young age, Cari was affected by cancer. By witnessing her family experiences, she developed an intuitive empathy for people dealing with cancer and it is what attracted her to a career in oncology nursing. For the past twenty years she has have cared for people with cancer in a variety of health care settings from inpatient to outpatient and hospice. Cari is privileged to have facilitated a breast cancer support group for the past ten years. Through her own journey of personal growth and transformation, she has grown in her ability and wisdom to guide people through the physical, emotional and spiritual journey of cancer. Cari believes that cancer provides an opportunity for incredible personal growth. After a cancer diagnosis, there is an intense focus on getting a plan to fight the cancer. Much energy is spent dealing with the impact of the treatment on the lives of the person and their family. Once the treatment is complete, there is an expectation that life will resume as it did prior to the treatment. The fear and anxiety that accompanies being a cancer survivor becomes a daily part of life. Living out of this fear and anxiety creates great discomfort for people. Often people can’t quite put their finger on what doesn’t feel right, but nothing feels okay. Others are overwhelmed with a flood of emotions that are terrifying. Cari guides people through a process of understanding these emotions. She assists them with getting in touch with the wellness in themselves and assist them in developing a plan of self care so they can discover who they really are. She holds the space for people to take a journey towards themselves. In understanding their true selves and embracing their spirituality, the relationship with self is a path towards truly loving your life. Learn more at: Thriveaftercancer.com

Her mission is to empower others to recognize their own self-worth and enable them to share their knowledge and passions with the world, whether that's through self-published books, eBooks, articles, or dynamic blogs and Web sites. Her goal is to fuel as many people as possible to share their solution-oriented messages - and to dismantle the self-sabotaging belief that they have to be trained writers in order to communicate well. All they have to do is (a) know what their message is, (b) who their audience is, and (c) why they need to tell their story. The rest - the editing, book production, marketing, etc. - is the easy part. But no one else on earth can manufacture the passion and knowledge that they, alone, possess.

A professional editor, writer, and speaker with a BA in Nonfiction Writing from the University of Arizona, Laura is the author of several exceptional workbooks, including eBooks Made Easy, Words Made Easy, Niching Made Easy, Self-Publishing Made Easy, Car Buying Made Easy, Handwriting Analysis Made Easy, and 1,001 Real-Life Questions for Women. Tuesday, July 14, 2009 Christine S. Lang
Chris Lang was inspired to open PATHS- Patient Advocacy Training & Health Services in April of 2009. Others have joined her in this endeavor to help and educate others. PATHS's mission is to Help Others Learn to Navigate Their Medical Journey. Chris is a teacher and corporate trainer by profession and has left the corporate world to form this non-profit. Why? For the past 26 years she has gained valuable, first hand experience as a patient advocate and assisting others that were placed in her life. In 1988, she found herself in intensive care, speaking for her husband for 8 months while he suffered through operation after operation, one medical crises after another. Both fought their way back to John's restored health but after 1 1/2 years he had 2 organ transplants ( the kidney was donated by Chris), 20 additional surgeries and cared for by 12 different teams of medical services. In this situation being a teacher paid off and Chris learned valuable lesson on how to form cooperative medical teams, to effectively communicate to medical providers, work with insurance companies, and build a community support network.

Chris's journey with John spanned 13 years and during that time and in the 13 years since she has been called on to assist many patients and their families in the middle of a medical crises. " I always thought that anyone put in the same situation would know what to do. But I have learned that there are 7 steps that you need to master to effectively advocate for yourself or others. It doesn't matter what the condition. I truly believe that there is no purpose to learn anything except to help others have an easier journey. This is mine "

Last year she found herself once again advocating 24/7 for a family member. This time when people told me her should be teaching others before their medical situation is acute, she listened. PATHS works with individuals and ask them to chose their advocate and come for 2 1/2 hours to learn how to master those 7 critical steps. PATHS is also available to coach patients and advocates during acute episodes. " We will all be called on to advocate for someone we love. Don't we owe it to them to be prepared to be effective." Please visit our web site at: www.patientpaths.org to learn about our seminars, doctor and patient recommendations, volunteer opportunities, and how you can become a supporter.

Monday, June 22, 2009 Lehla Eldridge
Lehla Eldridge studied at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama from 1989-1992 along with a host of now famous people. On graduating she was awarded a scholarship by Twentieth Century Fox to study theatre in South Africa. Her love for South Africa did not leave her as she went back to write The South African Illustrated Cookbook. She traveled around South Africa in a hire car with a paint box, pen and notebook and wangled her way in to people’s kitchens. The Cookbook is now on its sixth print run and has also been translated in to Dutch.   She went on to live on a fruit farm with her husband, ran and owned a restaurant and had three children all in three years. This led her to taking time out for her sanity to produce a book called The Lovely Book for Wonderful Women. It is a book celebrating wonderful women and is written with humour and insight in to what makes women laugh and feel good.   She now lives in South Africa with her husband and three children.  To learn more, visit www.lovelybooks.co.za or email her at:  info@lovelybooks.co.za

Thursday, June 18, 2009 Caroline Cheshire
Caroline Cheshire enjoyed a successful marketing career in the UK, and Holland  before moving  to the US where her ‘perfect’ life was challenged.  In one year she suffered two miscarriages, added twins to her family of two daughters and was told she had Thyroid cancer.   At the same time, her husband was struggling to make his start-up company a success.  What Caroline learned was that very few people know how to handle the situation when a friend's life takes a turn for the worst.  At first she was angry that people didn’t reach out.  Then she turned that disappointment into helping and guiding people to do better.  “Most people play it safe with flower arrangements, which are lovely in ones and twos.  But after my first miscarriage, the delivery man asked if it was my birthday.  I was sitting in a room of flowers but had never felt so alone”.  Then a visitor she hardly knew opened the door to healing, which caused Caroline to think long and hard about what that person had done ‘right’.  She followed that experience by completing a counseling course at a local college, and then turned her mission of into www.healingbaskets.com.  Her hope is that Healing Baskets will give a person something, whether gifts, words or just the courage to reach out.  Knowing that a friend gets it, understands even a little of what you’re going through makes that journey a little less scary, a little less alone.   That’s why she started healingbaskets.com.  "No one should have to go it alone.”

Linda hosts many of her retreats at GardenSpirit Guesthouse, her garden retreat in North Carolina. In 2009, she facilitated the world’s first ADHD Women’s Virtual Retreat.
