Pets
by Beth Abbott

My daughters love pets. For that matter, so does my husband. I however, prefer a nice episode of Bindi the Jungle girl. That’s about my limit with pets. Now don’t get all up in arms and call PETA on me, we have a cat, and I love him. However, if it were left up to the rest of the gang living in this house, we would be living in a zoo…ok, ok, at the very least a farm.

For the past 6 months my 3 year old has wanted a hamster. Being deathly afraid of mice, hence the cat, this idea has adamantly been vetoed. I have told her she can have a hamster, or anything else that her heart desires when she moves out. So she has decided she will move into the hall way. A good start, but not far enough away for me to allow a rodent in the house. I felt fairly certain that she would grow out of this, or at the very least give it up as my refusals have become louder. The good news is, she has at least quit asking for a hamster. The bad news is she has replaced it with a parrot. A noisy, smelly, pooping parrot. She said his name was “Squashy”. Which is what I would have done to the rat. You animal lovers will be happy to know I have allowed Squashy to take up residence with the Abbotts. He follows her everywhere. She loves him so much, and takes great care in making sure he has every comfort a parrot could have. She pets him, and gets his water. I have to admit, for a three year old she has really stepped up to the perching post with this one. That parrot doesn’t leave her sight.

I know she is only 3, but she’s shown such responsibility with this parrot, I have decided to let her have a hamster. She has promised she will take care of it just like she takes care of Squashy. Promised that she will keep it in its cage and not let it out even for one little bit. How could I turn down such a request. Big blue eyes begging me to “please mommy please”. I caved.

Did I mention that Squashy was an imaginary parrot? At this pace, I may let my 6 year old have a horse after all.
