From Desperate Housewife to PR Diva in Nine Life-Altering Steps
My
public relations consulting, publicity coaching, and information
products business started in February of 2001 with a desire to earn
enough money to buy better groceries. Today, I’ve got a full book of
business with amazing clients with great stories to tell, and I am too
busy to cook.
PR Expert and Publicity Toolkit Author
The
majority of my time is spent in the media trenches to bring favorable,
local media attention to the winning ways of a group of select clients
across the Puget Sound region of Washington State. As an experienced,
talented, and passionate publicist and storyteller, I know who to call
and what to say to capture the attention and interest of writers and
editors around town and elsewhere. I am also the author of the
Media-Savvy-to-Go publicity toolkit that helps publicity-seeking
business owners everywhere get seen, heard, and celebrated in their own
backyards.
And There is More!
I am also a newspaper columnist, ezine publisher, article author, and speaker.
My Qualifications and Career Experience
Before
launching my business, I invested a lot of years working in
marketing/promotion/publicity positions at some of the nation’s leading
fast food restaurants. I even worked as a marketing consultant for one
of Seattle’s premier broadcasting companies. In this role, I gained an
up-close-and-personal understanding of the power of television and
radio to build business and buzz for companies of all sizes and types.
For many years, I spent most of my waking hours figuring out ways to
help busy people get what they wanted quickly and affordably so they
could get fast on their way. Those lessons still inform my work today.
Getting
phones to ring, creating media buzz, building credibility, and
fostering collaborative, enjoyable relationships with clients, virtual
staff, and the media are what my efforts are all about. My journalistic
and enthusiastic approach to storytelling has helped build trusted
relationships with many influential reporters and editors in the Puget
Sound region and beyond. Representing the public relations and
communications interests of some of the Northwest's leading
organizations is an honor and a privilege. In the summer of 2006, I
authored and brought to market the Media-Savvy-to-Go Publicity Toolkit
to help success-seeking business owners earn their own favorable
publicity without spending a fortune. Joan Stewart, known as The
Publicity Hound (www.publicityhound.com), says they are fabulous, and
she wishes that she had written them. More Media-Savvy-to-Go products
and services are in development to expand the reach and impact of my
knowledge, passion, and service.
What Sets Me Apart
* I specialize in helping little-known companies with big ideas and
amazing intentions look big in the media. I am an evangelist for agency
clients and the expertise, products or services they bring to market
and passionate about making a difference for others through my work in
ways that are easy to notice and quantify. I enjoy helping clients and
colleagues make winning connections to proven resources that can
advance their success.
* I am motivated to earn "joy to work
with" status among all the clients, vendors, business partners, and
colleagues I am fortunate to meet, serve, and celebrate through media
relations, storytelling, consulting, and speaking.
* I am generous of spirit and seek first to advance the success of others knowing that my success will ultimately follow.
* I am particularly skilled at writing and placing articles in the
Puget Sound and selected trade media and helping quality companies earn
awards, recognition, and media attention for their winning ways.
* I earn clients' esteem as I work with diligence, passion, and impact
to bring client stories into the media spotlight through public
relations services and/or via the high-value, affordable
Media-Savvy-to-Go publicity tools that make it possible to earn ink and
air on a do-it-yourself basis.
My Education
I
earned Bachelor of Science degree in business administration with a
marketing emphasis from California State University at Northridge. Here
the seeds for a promising career in public relations and communications
took root. I earned thousands of dollars toward my college tuition by
entering essay contests and winning.
Five Things About Me That Might Surprise You
* As a nine-year-old, I figured out how many licks it took to get to
the center of a Tootsie Pop. I earned a certificate from the company
president for my accomplishment, and I’ll never share the answer.
* I have every O Magazine
that has ever been printed and dream of sharing a cup of tea with Oprah
Winfrey one day to thank her for the positive influence she has had on
my life.
* I ran a half-marathon the year I turned 40. I put in
175 miles of training time the three months leading up to the race,
even though I had hardly run more than three miles at a time prior. The
lessons I learned about how to apply passion, time, and discipline
toward achieving big goals informs every move I make as a business
owner, wife, parent, and friend today.
* My son Kyle says that if there were Olympic medals for cleaning and laundry, I’d earn the gold.
* “The Success Principles” by Jack Canfield is among my favorite business books.
