Balance Your Checkbook & Your Diet
by Janis Bowers

Better budgeting starts with smarter shopping.  Cutting coupons and finding generic alternatives are obvious ways to be more frugal.  Balance your diet and your checkbook by following these simple tips.

Make fewer trips.
Quick trips usually end up costing the purchaser 54% more than planned.  Try investing the time to plan one big shop and make sure you fill your belly before you go.  You will have a much better chance of avoiding impulse purchases if you are running on a full tank.

Cook tonight for tomorrow’s lunch.

Plan for leftovers; making $2 worth of extra food tonight can help you avoid spending $6 on tomorrow’s lunch.  If you practice this every day, you can save about $80 per month or close to $1,000 per year.

Start an herb garden.

Spice up any meal by picking fresh herbs from your own garden. A few seeds, a little dirt and a window sill is all it takes to save big on fresh herbs.  Find out more about planting your own herbs by visiting “How Stuff Works” .

Preserve in-season items

When you buy fruits and vegetables at the peak freshness you typically get the best flavor and price.  Don’t let sale items or farmer’s market fresh fruits and veggies go to waste.  Invest some time in preserving by drying, canning or freezing for later use if you purchased more than you will use.

Keep complimentary pantry items on hand
Avoid the temptation to order pizza or stop for takeout by keeping complimentary items in your pantry.  Keep refried beans, corn tortillas and salsa on hand for quick Mexican fare or have a pantry pasta night with dry spaghetti and jarred sauce.  You will save calories and money by planning for emergency meals.
