I remember once calling a friend to help me with my closet emergency....I had so much stuff crammed into my closet that the rod literally broke free from the wall! Its a good thing I didn't call my boyfriend because Bill took one look at it and could not stop laughing...more than 20 years later and he still has not let me forget!
Needless to say, it was time for a serious closet makeover. Why not? It was all in the floor at this point. Didn't make much sense to hang it back up without going through it.
I like to think of that day as a trip to the Smithsonian (or the Salvation Army)....my closet was more like a museum than a place where I would actually find clothes to wear... By the time I removed the clothes that were worn out, stained, and completely out of style, I had thrown away about half of the clothes. Upon further paring down, there was really very little functional clothing in the closet. And the important pieces that should have been in my closet were sadly missing...
Here's the basics, ladies...
One really great dress (Black, Blue or Beige)
One pair of jeans that you must LOVE
One white blouse
One pair of great tailored pants of a neutral color
One jacket or sweater set
One coat (style depends on your age, style and geographics of your location)
One great handbag that is excellent quality, medium size and neutral color
One pair of neutral pumps of excellent quality
One necklace and earrings of excellent quality
Once you have these pieces, feel free to buy all of the blings and fun pieces that you want and can afford. Just be sure that you always have access to these pieces, that they fit properly and are in excellent condition.
