The Art of Healing - Part 9 - Anticipation
by Mary McManus

Anticipation - prediction, prevision, the act of predicting (as by reasoning about the future)

In seven days, I, along with my husband Tom and daughter Ruth Anne,(Team McManus) are experiencing the anticipation of taking our place at the starting line of the 113th Boston Marathon. Why would anyone choose to run 26.2 miles?  For Team McManus the answer is easy, we are running for the patients at Spaulding Rehab Hospital who are learning how to help themselves in anticipation of a recovery from a major life event which has changed their lives forever. My life was changed forever when I was diagnosed with post polio syndrome in December of 2006. Thanks to Spaulding Rehab Hospital, on April 20, 2009 I am anticipating a glorious day overflowing with perfect running weather (50-60 degrees and slightly overcast), fair winds and a tail wind at our backs as I celebrate the miracle of healing running through each of the towns along the Boston Marathon route. I anticipate that my quad muscles are interwoven braids of God's finest gold fueled and poised to make this journey; my bones are strong and healthy; my joints have wonderful foam insulation to absorb the shock as my feet pound the asphalt and I am aligned with the Spirit of Wilma Rudolph, a polio survivor who was the first American woman to win 3 gold medals in the Olympics.

Whenever anticipation becomes colored by fear and anxiety, I transform those thoughts and reflect on only positive outcomes which are woven into the poem, Marathon Monday:

Marathon Monday

It's Marathon Monday, it's my day to shine
with husband and daughter poised at starting line.

I know I can do this - there's no way to fail
tethered to God through this race I can sail.

For over a year, we've trained from our heart
Mind, body, spirit - we're ready to start.

We know the course and we know the terrain
We're primed for the challenge - we know they'll be pain.

The glory's far greater than what we may face
We're living examples of God's shining Grace.

Shake out all the nerves - there's nothing to fear
Let in all the love from the crowds as they cheer.

With prayers and angels our feet feel so light
Joy overflowing the finish in sight.

We conquered the course fueled by love in our heart
The race has been won blessed by God from the start.

Whatever challenges you may be facing, release worry, fear and anxiety and anticipate that a positive outcome awaits - have faith, be patient, trust, Believe and know that life's not about the destination, it's about the journey. We may not get to choose what circumstances we experience, but we do get choose what to focus on so why not focus on the positive and anticipate a glorious outcome.
