Stores and public service personnel (radio, TV, cinema, and business people) are all trying to be “Politically Correct” during this time of year. It all stems from the exchange and circulation of the “Mighty Dollar” (oops, is it still all that mighty?) These corporations don’t want to loose any business by saying the wrong thing to the wrong person, and corporate wants to KISS (keep it simple…).
Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Kwanza and the like have been replaced by Happy Holidays and Seasons Greetings. And Thanksgiving greetings have been done away with all together. I thought December 25 was a date set aside to celebrate Jesus’ birthday. Well, where’s Jesus?
Even though most of the songs that we sing and listen to in December have nothing to do with the Birth of Christ [Can you name any that have Christmas in the title and speak anything about Christ?] (All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth, This Christmas, Christmas in Killarney, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, I’ll Be Home For Christmas, It’s Beginning To Look a Lot Like Christmas, White Christmas (that would be a miracle here in Florida), O Christmas Tree, Rocking Around the Christmas Tree, The Christmas Song, 12 Days of Christmas, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, Have a Holly Jolly Christmas, All I Want For Christmas is You, Feliz Navidad, Snoopy’s Christmas Song, A Dixie Christmas {Have you thought of some more?} Even Alvin & the Chipmunks sing Christmas Carols. And what about the story that is read every year in some homes called “The Night Before Christmas”; should we change its title also? Yet we are so afraid to say the word Christmas when spreading a little cheer to others (I think they call that Christmas Cheer).
It would behoove a vocal artist to record some songs to celebrate Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Kwanza and any other holiday that may have fallen by the wayside. My intent is not to belittle another person’s holiday festivities and traditions, but to help put a stop to the destruction of the Christmas greeting – Merry Christmas!
So what can we do, as Christians and traditionalists, to keep Christmas in this holiday season and let others know how this lack of recognition affects us? Well, we can write (see the list of “Naughty or Nice” agents that was researched by American Family Association http://www.afa.net/christmaslist.asp), make a phone call or even boycott the agency or business that chooses to neglect Christmas from their advertisements, store signage and/or greetings. After writing all the “Naughty” agencies on the list, I discovered that most of them were going to remain Politically Correct (don’t get discouraged, there’s probably 10 other people out there who will replace your feelings with an “I don’t care” attitude –stick with your convictions). I’ve also decided to greet everyone, whom I come in contact with, with a great big Merry Christmas and a Happy Prosperous New Year (we all need that); and be surprised at the crazed looks, surprised faces and yes, even smiles that you get in return. Let’s continue to spread Christ’ Spirit to all men. Merry Christmas ;)
