Diva Toolbox Article Format

The following are some guidelines for contributing authors:

  • Our tone is professional, but confident and accessible. Write as if Katie Couric or Oprah Winfrey were going to read your article out loud to their audience. They are smart women, but they have a sense of humor.

  • It’s always a good idea to read your article out loud before you send it in.

  • Use minimal formatting. Your article should be in Arial font, size 12 point. Please leave two spaces between the period at the end of a sentence and the first word of the next sentence. Please indent two spaces for a new paragraph. Do not insert a line between paragraphs.

  • Diva Toolbox is not a scholarly journal. Please do not include reference citations. At the end, your article may include a link or something about getting further information on the topic.

  • Articles should be between 400 and 600 words. Rarely will we publish an article longer than 600 words - this is an online publication that users read on their computer screens.

  • Anyone who writes an article about their business sector can mention their business at the end of the article, and encourage readers to contact them for more info. The tag has to be subtle.

  • We are interested in promoting what is positive; not criticizing what an individual writer may feel is negative. There is an appropriate place for sincere criticism, such as in a review or a cautionary article, but our tone will always be constructive.

  • Articles should be written to reflect how busy women access information—give a plan, provide a list, not just endless paragraphs of text. Drawings, graphs, and pictures are all good.

  • Please avoid using filler words such as “actually,” “however,” “as a matter of fact,” etc. We will edit them out.

  • We will copyedit and proofread your article for typos, grammar, clarity, and “Diva Toolbox Style.” We will not change content unless we believe that you have made a factual error (such as a wrong date or misspelled name). We will return your article for your approval before publication.

  • You are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of your content.
